From Beastie Boys To Han Cholo, A Creative Space In Atwater
The Beastie Boys, although not Los Angelenos, have done a lot of work in Los Angeles. One of their workspaces was in Atwater Village, in a spot called G-Son Studios. The space was where they recorded Check Your Head, their 1992 album, as well as other projects. Although the space is no longer just a recording studio, it is still a creative home for creatives. From Han Cholo to X-Large Clothing, the space is a hub for many cool people to make things.
OBEY has made a great little documentary on the space from the current artists own words, detailing the history. Brandon Schoolhouse of Han Cholo discusses the space and its history, which he is very much a part of. Schoolhouse used to work at Grand Royal years ago, when X-Large was still located across the street from G-Son. As you will see, the space is still a musical hotspot that is now much more than just a place to make music.

As with any place, if you really want to experience it, don’t just sneer and condemn it, dive in and live it like a local. (Most people are from somewhere else anyway, so you’re just as local as they are, now.) Drive around the different neighborhoods. Be totally optimistic. Aim to meet as many people as possible, and get something out of your short-lived friendships. Introduce them to each other. Have lots and lots of lunches, and enjoy the conversations. Go to the beach and hike in the hills.
It may feel fake, but faking it is fine. (Kurt Vonnegut wrote, “You are whatever you pretend to be.”) If you throw yourself into it whole-heartedly for a while, you’ll learn something useful from it, and have it as a great life experience, as you go back to whatever culture feels a better fit for the real you.
The How Original Show by Parra
Dutch artist Parra returns to Los Angeles’ HVW8 Art + Design Gallery with The How Original Show. An exhibition consisting of all new work in the form of drawings and paintings, revealing the process of sketch to final piece. Each work is an original, a departure from his well known numbered silkscreen editions.
Parra (b.1976) is best known for his curved post-Pop imagery, highly saturated colors, vibrant hand-drawn letters and worlds inhabited by hybrid, surreal characters. Celebrated by galleries and championed by an underground following from the outset, Parra has quickly become a respected and eclectic artist worldwide. Working across drawing, painting, animation and sculpture, Parra creates an enigmatic and instantly recognizable style that defies easy categorization. Parra is cofounder of cult apparel label Rockwell Clothing and a member of electronic music group Le Le. Parra lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
